Scotland Challenge

Climbing UK's highest mountain for Gwalior's Children's Charity

Scotland, famed for its golf heritage, world class whiskey, haggis and amongst other things, its independence movement was the site for Gwalior Children’s Charity's latest charity challenge.

Last October four volunteers including myself signed up to climb the UK’s highest mountain, deep in the stunning area of Scotland known as the Highlands. The mountain, Ben Nevis, is over 1,300 meters above sea level, or over 4,400 feet and takes 8 hours to climb. It is not an easy hike and temperatures at the top rarely rises above 5℃ (40 ℉) with gale force, or rather, ‘face numbing’ winds. Despite being all quite fit, we soon found that trying to summit Ben Nevis was tough and moments for rest were being increasingly needed! Fortunately, we were blessed with glorious weather to make the climb in the best conditions possible. We felt blessed and lucky!

Fortunate, blessed and lucky are not adjectives that can describe orphans in India who are sometimes not able to find food or shelter, let alone unconditional love that every child born in this world should have. Our volunteers' aim was to raise £1,500 ($2300 USD), the cost to provide a child with complete care in our campus called Snehalaya, meaning the home with love. Gwalior Children’s Charity provides a child born without privilege, disabled and therefore sometimes shunned by family and neglected and abused in many cases with a loving home. One in which they receive not only shelter and food, but medicine, holistic education, live-in parental carers and the unconditional love they deserve.

Our intrepid volunteers raised under £500 ($760 USD).

Any amount you can donate will be provided to our partner in India to ensure one child, born without privilege, disabled and abused can be taken into Snehalaya and be given a chance to live a life of dignity. Any small amount you can give translates into profound enrichment for society’s most vulnerable. Thank you!
